3rd Mirecourt Music Festival

The International Musical Meetings 2013 welcomed nine European artists in residence in Mirecourt from November 19 to 24 to share, discover, offer the great pages of French Music alongside rare works: Chausson, Debussy, Fauré, Milhaud, Poulenc, Samazeuilh, Ravel.

The contemporary composer Edith Canat de Chizy  was celebrated through a creation written for the Rencontres Musicales de Mirecourt entitled "Cinq Miniatures" and the interpretation of numerous works of chamber music. His piece Siloël for string orchestra was the occasion of a privileged meeting with the professors and student luthiers of the School of Music of Mirecourt.

Thus, 2013 has made an often unknown repertoire shine beyond borders in all its diversity and richness and has forged a strong bond between Mirecurtien and European artists and luthiers.

The 9 artists in residence:

Friday, November 22 – 8:30 p.m. – Rio cinema: Carte blanche to Yann Dubost

The "Carte Blanche" concert at Yann Dubost raised public awareness on the one hand, on the discovery of the solo repertoire for Double bass in contemporary pieces and on the other hand in pieces of original ensemble music.

The Bootsini duet will remain in the collective memory.

During this concert was also proposed the piece "Siloël" by Edith Canat de Chizy for 12 strings. Six senior students from the music school, two teachers (violin and double bass) joined the artists. It was a real challenge for these young amateurs to be in the presence of international artists and the composer.

Saturday November 23 – 3 p.m. – Rio cinema: Concert – Conference with Edith Canat de Chizy

The strong and particular theme of these 5th Meetings was to make known the works of a current composer. The choice of Edith Canat de Chizy was quickly imposed. A trained violinist, his works for strings are benchmarks. His presence in Mirecourt during these Meetings was a plus in this project, especially during his conference where the artist explained his musical and professional career, his artistic choices and inspirations... During this conference, 3 works of 'Edith Canat de Chizy were performed and explained to the public: Cliffs, Tiempo and Prélude au silence.

23nov-2013

Saturday, November 23 – 4 p.m. & 6 p.m. – Rio Cinema: Concerts

To illustrate the composer's words, two concerts have been designed with works by composers from the 20th and 21st centuries (Samazeuilh, Poulenc, Milhaud, Ravel, Chausson) on the program. The public was able to make the link between the different musical and cultural currents (poetry, dance, etc.) in vogue at that time.

23nov-2013-2

The chosen works known or less known to the public were a discovery for some. These technical pieces of high virtuosity were a revelation.

23nov-2013-3

Saturday, November 23 – 8:30 p.m. – Rio Cinema: Concert

23nov-2013-4

One of the strong points of these Meetings was also the creation of a piece specially written for Mirecourt entitled "Cinq Miniatures". Five short pieces for violin and piano by Edith Canat de Chizy were revealed to the public and commented on by the composer. This piece will appear at the next international violin competition in Mirecourt scheduled for November 2014.

23nov-2013-5

This concert made it possible to welcome the professional luthiers of the GLAAF gathered in Mirecourt for Sainte Cécile. A moment of conviviality was experienced between artists and luthiers on the sidelines of these Meetings.

23nov-2013-6

Sunday, November 24 – 11 a.m. – Rio Cinema: Closing Concert

This closing concert was an exceptional moment experienced by all. The generosity of the artists went far beyond the formal framework of the concert.

24nov-2013

Generally speaking, the nine artists present at Mirecourt were remarkable in every respect: present on stage, available to the public, attentive to the students and organizers.

Testimonials

The fact of working two completely different works with the same musicians was very interesting. While Bootssini was more easily affordable, Edith Canat's piece from Chizy surprised me personally. The more I listened to it, the more I worked on it, the more I loved it. And I realized that I was able to understand the universe and the atmosphere of the composer. I was very happy to be able to discover the work of this contemporary composer and to meet her during concerts.

It was a chance to be able to rehearse so many times and intensively with professional musicians who participated in the project. The passage in concert with them was for me a great joy. They knew how to reassure and encourage us. Lucile Sanders: student in DMA 2 (violin making) and violinist who participated in the project

What a pleasure every year to have such artists and such a program in Mirecourt!!! The meetings offer us (us student luthiers) privileged moments with exceptional musicians, what a great experience! I hope this will continue again and again for future generations of luthiers, that they can experience these unforgettable moments of exchange and music! A big thank you and congratulations! Sarah, student luthier and violinist who participated in the project

Quite simply, the word that comes up with the students is: SUPER. For the students present at the educational meeting with Yann Dubost: something has changed. For me, as a teacher, it is a lever on which I can rely, particularly in relation to the instrument, building trust. All were fired up and very impressed. Excellent contact and artist with whom we will be happy to work again. Hervé Perrin, double bass teacher who participated in the project

Thank you all for your wonderful welcome. I had a lot of fun working on my music with you. And hopefully see you soon. Edith Canat de Chizy (composer)

Moments of intense pleasure therefore rare and precious. Thank you for giving them to us. Rich, friendly, warm encounters ensured that this superb achievement will not be forgotten. Thank you all and see you next year…without fail! Patrick

These 5th international meetings were fantastic! A real marathon for the artists: 5 concerts in less than 48 hours, but a treat for the public. The very pleasant room allows a very appreciable proximity for chamber music and the richness of the encounter between contemporary composer / luthiers / instrumentalists is a brilliant idea; bravo for the very balanced programming, we never get bored, we would have stayed in Mirecourt again and again…! See you soon ! Nicole

The 5th International Meetings of Mirecourt are over; They allowed me to share intense moments. What about a few days later? Here are some impressions: judicious choice of works performed, discovery of contemporary music, sometimes hermetic, explanation of the composer on her intentions in her creations, presentation of the works played by the musicians, prowess of the musicians to apply in such a short time all these musical games, harmony between students and professionals, rapprochement between the public and the musicians, audience seduced but perhaps too sparse, friendly organization and reception. A perfect score played together, with harmony, for the success of these Meetings. To perpetuate for our greatest joy to all. Agnès, an uninformed music lover who followed the entire program.
